EMCDDA calls for drug treatment and infections prevention

The EMCDDA calls for increased access to drug treatment and infections prevention for European prisoners

According to the 2007 EMCCDA Annual Report there has been a 47% increase in recorded drug related offences in the EU in the period 2000-2005, the majority of those being related to drug use or possession for use in many EU countries.

The EMCDDA denounces the negative implications of bad prison health, in particular for drug users, for the community as a whole and recognises the need to do more for the detection of serious communicable diseases such as HIV infection and tuberculosis, accompanied by adequate treatment and harm-reduction measures within the criminal justice system.
